Archangel asks Hawke to go undercover as an exchange pilot in the U.S.A.F., so that he can identify and stop a mutineer Air Force Pilot from turning over a new high-tech jet into Russian hands. Hawke discovers that the potential traitor is his old Vietnam buddy, Sam Roper, whose only motive is to buy the freedom of his son, who is being held in Russian hands. Complicating the mission is the fact that Roper´s wife, Nhi Huong is Hawke´s former lover.

We learn in this episode that Hawke´s rank in Vietnam was Captain.

13 Mar 2004, fullerflyer 33:
The "boy" in "Daddy´s Gone a Hunt´n" is well known 90´s teenage heart-throb:

13 Mar 2004, fullerflyer 33:
sorry... The "boy" is Chad Allen. Who was a star in the early 90´s on the series, "Our House" as well as numerous other movies/show.

26 Nov 2004, methos330 39:
A ´loud´ characteristic howl is heard as Airwolf emerges beyond the sand dunes in the opening shot of the title sequence and extends partially as Levay´s theme commences for the first time. The Airwolf howl is toned down significantly for the rest of the series´ title sequences.

The first proper episode of the series does a good job of establishing the scope of the show, from the characters' on-going development after the 'PIlot' episode, and it's the main cast's performance that shine in this one with JMV especially putting in a dark & moody performance as Hawke. Plenty of aerial action too which will keep the visual fans happy. "Who's got anything nice to say about Stringfellow Hawke?" "Well he's pretty." "And he's quiet." "Well I guess that's means he's pretty quiet!"

Nicely put Mark. But I feel it was one of the least-enjoyable episodes of the 1st Season (Spring 1984). Kag212

Not one of my highlights either, but I can respect their continuity from the pilot. I enjoyed watching Dom trying to learn about the engineering compartment.

As Lairkeeper says - Dom's instruction is one of the best parts! DOM: "I still don't know what all these knobs and buttons do!" STRING: "Don't sweat it Dom, when you touch that eject button, you'll be the first to know!" Also some great reactions from the first people to be faced with Airwolf in full combat mode!

One of my favourite episodes. As mark says it re-establishes the cast and has a great plot. Hawke is pitched as a loner again and is stubborn at first when asked whether he would take the mission. Great Episode IMHO...

This one's truly a keeper... yes... partly a yawner... however... let's talk series quality... Character development is important in any story. An episode, is but a chapter in the book, so to speak. And in this chapter... we begin to firmly see and get to know the people that we're quickly coming to love as the characters in this epic. Again... this one is an essential part of any library of Airwolf episodes you might wish to own... if you get a copy... make a backup... Paul

The highlight of the episode for me was the unique music... The title sequence was obviously a Levay experiment, with a deep bass tone as Airwolf rose up, followed by alternating tones before the logo spiraled down... The closing music stands up with the best of them, getting across the true Airwolf feel... you know...

One of the worst for me personally and definitely the worst for the first season. All I have to say is that I couldn't keep myself awake during this one. I think that about sums it up.

Receiving over 12 million viewers when broadcasted in it's original British mid-Eighties slot at 7:00 p.m., this episode has a hard-hitting storyline involving the question of whether a half-American, half Chineese 12-year old boy may be Hawke's long-lost and out of the blue son. With some real-acted dramatic scenes, backed up by an intriguing sign of political awareness and an awesome, suspenseful and surprisingly long-durated aerial sequence, this has to be one of the finer positive trademarks of AIRWOLF's 1984 1st Season.

"Daddy's Gone A Hunt'n", although not usually on the top 10 favorite episode lists of many fans, is full of powerful dialogue and strong acting. If you didn't know otherwise, you'd think Vincent, Cord, and Borgnine had acted together at least six months or more before this episode. There's also the nods to "Firefox" and "Officer And A Gentleman".

Not among my favorite episodes, but still a fairly good episode. Especially the dialog between Dom and Archangel is hilarious in this one. A fairly good plot and an important episode for character development.

I love this episode, purely for the scene in 'Russia'. The skill required to hover several tons of steel 18" off the ground while Dom disembarks is incredible. Kudos to the stunt pilot!!!

Not just because it is the first proper TV episode, but this is a very good episode. Just like the pilot movie, it has a dark and intense script and JMV as Hawke is as moody as ever. It´s also interesting to see how Hawke & Santini react to piloting Airwolf. The quality script shows them (particularly Dom) still coming to terms with being in control of the only supersonic helicopter in the world. And the aerial action is very strong indeed. When you watch quality first season episodes like this, it makes you kind of sad that in latter episodes (particularly the third season) Hawke & Santini battled run-of-the-mill bad guys and situations that Street Hawk could have dealt with before breakfast. This is possibly the darkest script of season 1.

This was a good follow on from the pilot - it was great to see some continuity with Dom training at the controls - most TV shows would have had him being expert from day 1 (I´m not even mentioning season 4). This episode sets up the interplay between the 3 men and reinforces their characters. I have to admit not one of my personal favourites but still a good show.

"Daddy´s Gone a Hunt´n" is, like all season 1 episodes, a great episode. I didn´t use to like it very much but after watching it a couple more times I really started to appreciate it. The plot is just very adult unlike the ones of some other episodes. All the story makes sense and I enjoy the foreign intrigue. There are great lines and I like the fact that you see Dom trying to get used to Airwolf. It might be a bridge towards the rest of the series but it is a good and necessary one. The only downside of it is the fact that it is questioned that the boy might have been Hawke´s son. It´s not such a stupid idea but I think it happened far too soon in the series with the previous episode featuring Gabrielle and everything. Apart from that the flight sequences are really good. You see the Lady a lot, flying through the landscapes and even though she not used in a proper dogfight it is quite entertaining to see her hovering and destroying stuff a bit like in "Sweet Britches". Plus there are some great angles of camera like just after she leaves the bad guy kind of begging for his life. Definitely a must-see.

As Le Wolf Man said, its as though the three leads knew exactly who their characters were, so early too! Superior outting! Reflects Hawke´s reluctant hero attitude, and... his patriotism. When Hawke says he´d trade Airwolf for the boy, he meant it,...Airwolf is a mere tool to Hawke (that is, Airwolf is a pawn at retrieving St.John)...one that he´ll use if and when HE sees it fit! Brilliant people! Brilliant!

This was actually the fourth episode shot, and I think it would have fit in better there than as a direct follow-up to the movie. Contains possibly the best Hawke/Santini/Archangel go rounds in the mess hall scene. JMV gets his most (and some of his best) dialogue in the series as we get to know Hawke better here than in perhaps any other episode. Wicked music over the end credits.

Not a favourite of mine, but still we get some real good chracter development here, along with a decent story, plenty of Airwolf action and strong references to the old U.S.S.R which i find quite interesting watching today.

In any future incarnations of AIRWOLF use a grown-up version of this kid as a new Stringfellow Roper Hawke. This episode helped develop the relationship between Dom,& Hawke. It also gave us the kid to expand the franchise in the future.

Another superb episode that continues with the dark and moody style established in Shadow of the Hawke. Plus some humourous banter between Archangel and Dominic.

Bloopers
13 Jan 2002, Martin G. Grant 22:
Dominic jumps out of Airwolf to rescue the young boy, however when he pushs down the 1st solider he encounters, he then rollsover and fires a few rifle bullets at the oncoming solider, but instead of the usual no blood, we see sparkles misteriously bouncing of the solider's uniform, however there isn't any solid objects on him.

After Hawke and Dom rescued the kid, watch as Hawke pushes the missle button for turbos instead of the turbo button on the joystick.

When Hawke is piloting the helicopter onto the back of the truck, at one point it seems directly over-head and about to touch down, but suddenly in the next shot (possibly over an ad break) is further back again. [Courtesy of Jayson Firestorm ¿ Airwolf editor @ TVTome.com]

Above blooper should be for 'One Way Express', sorry! D'oh!!

02 Mar 2008, woofwoof971 38:
I believe in the beginning of "Daddy´s Gone a Huntin´" when String and Dom are flying around the Valley Of The Gods before the mission that String is dressed in a USAF flight suit BEFORE Archangel recruits him.

03 Mar 2008, ebonyuk72 37:
When Dom goes into rescue the boy, he talks to him, then the camera goes back to Airwolf and you can clearly see two people in the front, Hawk, and who else? The next shot is Dom coming out of the building carrying the boy to put him in the front of Airwolf where the ´other person´ was sitting in the previous shot.
